Dingwall Castle

The important and mighty 13th - 18th century castle is no more. It was just a ruined site on this 1821 map. The blog describes its rise and fall. 

Tulloch Castle

The Castle started as a 16th century tower house with 19th & 20th century additions, Standing on Tulloch Hill, it has views over Dingwall, the Cromarty Firth, and to the West.

Castle Craig

This late 16th century tower house of the Urquharts sits on a sandstone crag on the north shore of the Black Isle, commanding stunning views across the Cromarty Firth.

David's Fort

On the outskirts of Conon Bridge is this enigmatic site, known as David’s Fort. It consists of a mound surrounded by a moat,. Despite many suggestions, it's date and function are uncertain.

Fairburn Tower

Built around 1545 by Murdoch Mackenzie, this 4-storey towerhouse was a ruin by the late 18th century. An imaginative restoration by the Landmark Trust.in 2022 means it is now rentable! Interested?

Foulis Castle

Foulis has been the home of Clan Munro since the 14th Century. The current castle dates from the 18th century after damage during the 1745 rebellion.

Ben Wyvis Distillery

The ‘Ben Wyvis Distillery’ was established on the southern approaches to Dingwall in 1879. By 1929 it was all over. Read about the heydays, and the decline.

Strathpeffer Spa

The Spa developed in the early 19th century, bcoming a popular watering place. Enhanced by the coming of the railway in 1870, it has a chequered history since.
